To be entirely condescending here, the world is trying to shift aware from Fossil fuels, as in fuel we have to extract from the ground, Methanol is one of those fuels that can be derived from cellulose or other organic materials. We are always going to be reliant on fuels for transport, mobile electronics or anything else that requires power to operate. Solar cells are a nice idea, but are severly limited in terms of power availability and location.

This device is obviously designed for recharging mobile devices, where solar panel charging is either inefficient or unavailable. And, to answer the risks? You'd need significant quantities BY INGESTION ALONE of it to poison you and if you're stupid enough to drink the stuff you're probably deserving of the grim fate you get.

I agree with Lindy is not a good way of charging stuff, they should use solar energy instead of this which is way cleaner, this produces waste after using it, or where do you think the cartridge goes? also where do you thing the left overs from the processed methanol go? aren't we trying to stop depending on fuels?

And you would want to depend on methanol, a toxic substance that can cause permanent liver damage and blindness if there is sufficiently prolonged skin exposure or accidental ingestion; so flammable it was banned from planes even before the new security procedures went into place; and where the usage for energy generation does not reduce your carbon footprint because.....???
