I recommend a fuzzy logic rice cooker if you eat rice every day, basically making your cooker an always-on device. Your rice will take about twice as long to cook as it does in on-off rice cookers — but if rice is part of your daily routine, that will never be a concern. In a fuzzy logic cooker, there will be no more scooping leftover rice into containers for the fridge. You can just get the cooker in a size that fits your needs. That device’ll cook then keep all the rice warm in it until you eat it all — usually within a day or day and half — at which point you’ll probably just wash out the bowl and put in more rice to cook for the next day or day and half.

I’ll start with the on-off cookers and move onto more complex models — which means the prices will go up as I proceed. Since all the rice cookers here are best in their class, I recommend buying the lowest-priced one that has all the bells and whistles — whether it’s a brown rice function or a pre-settable timer — you need as an individual:

Panasonic SR-G06FG 3.3-Cup Rice Cooker/Steamer

This no-frills 3.3-cup rice cooker weighs merely 4 pounds and measures 8 x 10 x 8 inches, making it a good option for small households with small kitchens. While the cooker does shut off automatically, it also has no other frills — no programmable options, or even a keep-warm function. However, you can get enough nicely-cooked rice for about 3 adults in roughly 35 minutes — White rice, that is. Since this cooker’s really only got one switch, if you want brown rice, you’ll need to soak the grains for a few hours before hitting cook. In fact, if what you usually eat is brown rice, this isn’t the cooker for you.

Get the Panasonic SR-G06FG at Amazon for $28.49., or go for the bigger Panasonic SR-G18FG 10-Cup Rice Cooker/Steamer if you’ve got a bigger family. That item comes with a veggie steamer you can put over the rice and costs $40.65 at Amazon.

Sanyo ECJ-N55W 5-1/2-Cup Electric Rice Cooker

This 5.5-cup cooker’s a bit more expensive than the Panasonic, but a lot more versatile too. For one, this Sanyo model’s good at cooking brown rice — and other types of rice — plus has settings for soup and porridge. The cooker also comes with a steamer basket.

At 10 x 9 x 10 inches and 6.5 pounds, the Sanyo ECJ-N55W is bigger and weightier than the Panasonic. And while the Sanyo does have a keep-warm function, making use of that function for more than a few hours will dry out your rice. Get it at Amazon for $54.95.

Panasonic SR-DE102 Rice Cooker/Warmer

Need a cooker you can preset? You can set the Panasonic SR-DE102 up to 13 hours in advance — then automatically keep your rice warm for 12 hours after that. The cooker also has 6 settings, from steam to brown rice to cake baking, so if you want a rice cooker that’ll do a lot more than cook rice, this Panasonic’s the cheapest on the market I’d recommend. Oh — and it comes with a steam basket for your veggies too.

Considering its price, the Panasonic SR-DE102 is a great value for picky rice eaters on a budget. It’s available at Amazon for about $85.

Sanyo ECJ-D55S 5.5-Cup Micro-Computerized Rice Cooker/Steamer

The Sanyo ECJ-D55S’s your best pick for an affordable fuzzy logic rice cooker, since it comes with everything from a 24-hour timer to a steamer tray to multi-menu settings. Read the Amazon reviews, and you’ll find that simple brown rice people love this cooker for its ability to make great, simple brown rice, while the more experimental people love how the cooker makes everything from quinoa to pudding.

As with all fuzzy logic cookers, expect longer cooking times — and higher prices. Amazon has the Sanyo Sanyo ECJ-D55S for $109.09.

Zojirushi NS-ZCC10 5.5-Cup Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker and Warmer

This fuzzy logic rice cooker’s got all it takes to cook and keep your rice perfect until you’re ready to eat it. Use the 24-hour programmable preset timer, select one of 5 rice settings, and even pick from a chime or tune to signal when your rice is cooked. There’s a quick cook feature too — but as you know by now, the rice won’t taste as good if you cook it quickly.

Sally’s Kitchen says “If you cook primarily brown rice, this is the one to buy.” Plus, a memory setting will remember how you like a certain type of rice, according to Fine Cooking. The one downside may be that the cooker doesn’t have a steamer basket. Get Zojirushi NS-ZCC10 for $175 at Amazon.

Zojirushi NS-ZCC18 10-Cup Rice Cooker and Warmer

Hey big spender! I know some of you Metaefficient readers are really into induction heating, where “instead of direct heat, electrical currents create electromagnetic waves to heat the pot quickly and evenly,” as LA Times puts it. It’s true — Induction heating tends to be more energy efficient than other methods. It also tends to be a lot more expensive!

Yes, you get the 5 settings plus “quick cook” option, the 24-hour timer, and the chime — but the Zojirushi Neuro Fuzzy has all of those features too. In fact, aside from the high price tag, LA Times’ note that this induction heating system warns “electromagnetic signal may affect pacemakers and erase the data on credit cards and audiotapes nearby” kind of turns me off of the whole thing. No, I don’t have a pacemaker, but I do have credit cards — and audiotapes from junior high sweethearts. If you still wanna go for it, get the Zojirushi NS-ZCC18 at Amazon for a about $180.
__

A few extra thoughts to keep in mind: Japanese cups — and you’ll notice all the cooker models I recommended are Japanese — are smaller than American cups (200 ml vs. 240 ml). Keep that in mind when making your purchase.

And if you’re really interested in getting a rice cooker for cooking things other than rice, heed Julia Moskin of the New York Time’s advice: “Cooking foods other than rice in a rice cooker is like baking a layer cake in an Easy-Bake oven: best approached with patience, curiosity and something to snack on in the meantime.” Of course, Julia then goes on to provide rough instructions for cooking everything from bibimbap to daffodil-yellow pilaf in your rice cooker….

Lastly: Rice cookers that make perfect rice every time weren’t always around — and some cultures actually developed yummy dishes based around the imperfectability of rice cooking. Which is to say that the toastily burnt bottom layer of rice used in some traditional Korean and Persian dishes will be tough to recreate in your always-perfect rice cooker — even if you get one with a toast setting. Perfection and efficiency sometimes comes at a cultural cost….

What makes a toaster efficient? Read through reviews of popular toasters, and you’ll see that many people seem to care more about the bells and whistles — automatic lowering of bread, pleasant dings when toasting is complete, and the like — than anything else.

But for this list, I focused on three main things: relatively even toasting of bread, ease of use, and potential for long-term use. Hope you find it helpful:

Krups 2-Slice or 4-Slice Toaster

These Krups toasters’ unique efficient feature is its built-in warming rack. As a Slate review points out, “the top of the toaster is slightly concave, so that you can rest rolls or sandwiches on it.”

Toaster Review named Krups 2-Slice Toaster the “Best Toaster Overall” because its many settings give the user a lot of control. Other useful features include a bread lift, a dishwasher-safe crumb tray, and a sleek, partly stainless-steel exterior.

For those with small kitchens though, the toaster’s large size might be a deal breaker: The 2-slice toaster’s 8 x 11 x 7.5 inches and weights 5 pounds, while the 4-slice toaster weighs a hefty 11 pounds. Users also note that this toaster’s slower than some others — and Slate’s reviewer found the control panel too confusing: “It’s not nuclear physics, but I did have to consult the manual.” At Amazon, the Krups 2-Slice Toaster costs $59.99.

KitchenAid KMTT200 2-Slice Toaster

If you usually toast just one slice of bread at a time, this KitchenAid toaster’s your best bet. Because heat radiates from empty toaster slots, a single slice in most toasters will brown more on one side than the other. But the opposite happens with KitchenAid KMTT200, according to Fine Cooking: Single slice toasting delivers perfect results, while two slice toasting yields uneven sides.

I especially like that the KitchenAid toaster comes in an all-stainless steel housing option, though red, blue, and black (above) plastic siding options are also available. Like the Krups, KitchenAid has a bread lift and a dishwasher-safe crumb tray — and is similarly bulky, weighing in at 5 pounds. Get it at Amazon for $69.99.

DeLonghi DTT900 Esclusivo or DTT980 Esclusivo

Love bells and whistles? Go with the DeLonghi Esclusivo (DTT900′s the 2-slice version, DTT980 the 4-slice), a toaster that gets rave reviews for its many cool features. Most notably, the DeLonghi raises and lowers toast automatically, a feature that won Slate’s reviewer over: “If your temperature control has already been set, it’s possible to make toast without ever touching the toaster. It’s magic, I tell you.” The alert chime that signals when toast is ready also had reviewers raving about this machine. And Fine Cooking notes that toast rises well above the slots, rendering a bread lift unnecessary.

However, bells and whistles can break — as some the reviews on Amazon point out — and unique features are tough to fix. And Toaster Review found that the slots, while extra-wide, “still seem inadequate for bigger and longer bagels and rolls.”

Still, I do like the toaster’s rounded edges and sleek design. On a more practical level, the DeLonghi has an efficient crumb tray. The entire bottom of the toaster can be removed to dump out the crumbs. Amazon sells the DTT900 for $79.95.

__

Last but not least: The most efficient toaster of all may be the toaster you already have. If you’re reading this post because you recently broke your toaster, you might want to save yourself a few bucks and try your hand at fixing it first. Here’s a short guide on eHow for fixing small problems, and a longer guide with a complicated diagram if you really want to get into it. Down with planned obsolescence!

Stovetop kettles are nostalgically cute in movies and lovable as collector’s items, but when it comes to our time-crunched, energy-efficient world, electric kettles–which boil water twice as fast as their stovetop counterparts–are the way to go.

More specifically, stainless steel electric kettles are the way to go, since plastic pots can contain bisphenol A (BPA) and start looking dingy pretty quickly. Plus, according to Chow.com, plastic pots can imbue your favorite brew with a plasticky taste and aroma. The best electric kettles boil water quickly, last a long time, require little maintenance, and are loaded with safety and efficiency features.

Here are our picks for the best electric kettles:

Chef’s Choice Cordless 677 Electric Kettle

The Chef’s Choice Cordless 677 is what I own — and by the fact that I’ve put it first, you might be able to guess that I’m happy with it. After 2 years of heavy use, this kettle still boils water in 4:50–or more accurately, still automatically shuts off in 4:50, since the water’s hot enough for my French press before that point. This mostly-stainless steel kettle has a detachable base and sleek design–with a concealed heating unit to prevent any buildup of mineral deposits.

The one downside of this kettle’s that the exterior does get a tad warm–but I can assure you it never gets piping hot. Get it at Amazon for $49, or opt for the slightly bigger 678 for $57.94.

Capresso H2O Plus Electric Kettle

The Capresso H2O Plus wins big on style points because it’s sleekly designed out of glass–which lets owners watch water boil, if so moved. Of course, the glass exterior can also be more easily broken by clumsy owners.

Like the Chef’s Choice, the Capresso boils water under 5 minutes, shuts off automatically, and has a concealed heating element. As a bonus, the cord retracts into the electric kettle’s base. This kettle also has a slightly smaller six-cup capacity, though whether that’s an upside or downside depends on how many people live in your household and how often you entertain guests. The Capresso costs $53.48 at Amazon.

Bodum Ibis Electric Water Kettle

The Bodum Ibis Electric Water Kettle boasts a 7-cup capacity and a boil time of 4:25 according to Slate, which gives the product top ratings. While the carafe’s made of an unstylish plastic, the Bodum shuts off automatically once water’s at boiling point and catches mineral deposits in a special filter. It boils a full tank in fewer than five minutes. Get it from Amazon for $47.99.

UtiliTEA Variable Temperature Electric Kettle

The 2.8-pound UtiliTEA Variable Temperature Electric Kettle’s the picky tea lover’s dream. This kettle heats up to 30 ounces of water via its concealed heating element to the temperature of your desire.

Want your water at the optimum temperature for green or white tea? All you have to do is turn a knob. For black tea? Turn the knob a little more to reach the regular boiling point. This UtiliTEA kettle’s yours for $49.95 at Amazon.

Zojirushi Electric Water Boiler and Warmer

If you just can’t wait five minutes for your water to boil in the morning, you can set your Zojirushi to do it for you ready your water at 140, 175, 195, or 208 degrees up to 10 hours ahead. Hit your snooze too many times? Then hit the reboil button when you wake up to reheat the water to 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

Of course, many Metaefficient readers will find this product less efficient than their standards. Do we really need water heated to an exact temperature available at the push of a button every moment in the day? I can readily answer no to this as an individual–but have also been in too many homes and offices where full kettles get completely forgotten on stoves for hours or reheated over and over again by absent-minded employees. If you’ve had to give up on reforming your family members or co-workers, this 7.2-pound Zojirushi with its 4-liter capacity and “interchangeable melody or beep indicator to alert the completion of the boiling process or a low water level,” as described on Amazon, might actually make your workplace or home run more efficiently.

Zojirushi Electric Water Boiler is available from Amazon.

Home Page: Zojirushi
__

If you decide to go for an electric kettle off this list, try to go for an item that’s mostly stainless steel with a handle that doesn’t get hot and an automatic shut-off button. And if your electric kettle doesn’t have a concealed heating element, follow the advice from Canada’s Office of Energy Efficiency and clean it regularly by boiling water with vinegar to remove mineral deposits that can reduce energy efficiency.

Picking a morning caffeine pick-up’s gotten confusing, what with the proliferation of certifications: organic, fair trade, Rain Forest Alliance, Utz Kapeh — not to mention all the self-certification schemes companies like Starbucks are trying to sell. To help you cut through the clutter, here are five eco-ethical coffees you can feel good about drinking:

Mirembe Kawomera “Delicious Peace” Coffee

War = Costly, painful, and inefficient in every sense of the word. Thankfully, Thanksgiving Coffee‘s working with the Mirembe Kawomera co-op in Uganda — a co-op that unites Christian, Jewish, and Muslim coffee farmers towards a common economic goal, allowing those farmers to make a living wage through their work while promoting peace despite religious differences. Get 12 oz of coffee for $10.50 at Thanksgiving Coffee.

Cafe Feminino

This organic, fair trade, and shade grown coffee comes via Cafe Feminino Foundation, a nonprofit that allows Peruvian women coffee producers to receive an extra 2 cents per pound over the fair trade price. Get yours at Grounds for Change, Caffe Ibis, and Cafe Humana at prices ranging from $9.95 – $10.95.

Equal Exchange Organic Love Buzz

Buy a package of this combo of Latin American coffee beans, and Equal Exchange — a U.S. co-op that supports coffee co-ops in other countries — will donate 20 cents to its Small Farmers Green Planet Fund, which goes towards supporting reforestation, organic conversion, and environmental protection efforts in Mexico, Nicaragua, Colombia and South Africa. A 12 oz bag costs $9 at Equal Exchange.

Organic Kona Coffee

Don’t like the food miles incurred by African coffees? Kona coffee’s the one coffee grown in the U.S. — in Hawaii, to be exact — which makes for fewer labor and environmental concerns, especially if you’re opting for the organic products. Since Kona blends are mixed with other types of coffee beans, opt for 100% Kona with organic certification, available from Kona Comfort ($25 an lb) Rooster Farms ($25.95 an lb), Kona Lea Plantation ($37 an lb) Mountain Thunder ($45.50 an lb), and other companies.

Cameron’s Coffee

Cameron’s Coffee in Port Perry, Ontario, buys and sells solar dried coffee, in packages with labels printed with veggie based inks via a waterless printing system. Local customers can take advantage of Cameron’s reusable container program; faraway customers get their stuff delivered in a recycled bag padded with compostable coffee chaff. Plus, Cameron’s Coffee offers 7 different types of coffees that are double certified organic and fair trade. Each 300 gram bag costs $9.99 CND — which translates to about $12.47 USD per pound — at Cameron’s Coffee.

Of course, some locavorian diehards will shun all coffee because of its food miles. And even for the less self-righteous, many other considerations enter into choosing coffee, from habit and nostalgia to supporting a local coffee roaster to acidic levels for those with sensitive stomachs to gourmet taste issues for the foodies. Luckily, organic and fair trade coffees fare very well in taste tests, showing that eco-ethical awareness can taste good too. This list of five is by no means a complete list — but they’re your first jolt into thinking about your daily caffeine habit.

Bloggers are drafting up their top 10 list posts and techies are e-organizing their hard drives for the new year. But if you’re old school — or have a boss who forces you to stick to ink-and-paper ways, here are some efficient 3-ring binders to help you catalog and file away 2008.

I stuck to binders with 30%+ post-consumer recycled content, and used 1″-ring binders as the price guide. Most of these binders are available in many different sizes:

Sustainable Group’s ReBinders

Pick from the original Rebinder (at least 35% post-consumer recycled content cardboard) or the tougher Greenback Rebinder (85% post-consumer recycled content chipboard). Both are assembled in Seattle by Northwest Center, which provides job services to disabled and disadvantaged people. Plus, if you manage to destroy your binder cover somehow, you can recycle the remains then replace them with new covers, simply by detaching and reattaching the 3-ring steel part by following the directions on Sustainable Group’s site. Find Rebinders at Whole Foods marketed under the New Leaf label, or buy them in bulk online for as little as $3.95 per 1″-ring binder.

Circuit Board Binders

Made of old computer circuit boards, these binders would make great gifts for your coder friend. Get them for a pricy $28 each at Green Earth Office Supply — or make your own by following the directions on Instructables.

Naked Binder

The stylish, acid-free Naked Binder has a board cover made with 97% post-consumer waste from Connecticut. Assembled in the U.S., the binders also come in spine-wrapped or all-wrapped versions (wraps are made of cotton). The company boasts that the binders are 100%-recyclable — though most consumers would be hard pressed to find a recycler for minute amounts of scrap cotton or steel rings. Still, the binders should efficiently last a while, since they’ve been tested up to 50,000 flexes. Each binder costs at least $8 a pop at Naked Binder.

Vuncana Recycled Rubber Binders

Made from 100% post-consumer recycled rubber, Vulcana binders come with an inner side flap and business card holder. But priced at $36.50 a pop at Vulcana, this binder’s way out of my price range.

TerraCycle Eco-Binders

TerraCycle Eco-Binders boast at least 75% post-consumer recycled content for its paper cover. Plus, the steel rings are made of 80% recycled material. The cover’s extremely hard and durable, but if you manage to damage it somehow, you can send it to TerraCycle for repurposing. Find 1″-ring binders at your nearest OfficeMax for $3.99.

EarthBinder

The EarthBinder’s made with 96%+ post-consumer recycled chipboard in Omaha, Nebraska. You gotta buy them in bulk though; a set of 10 1″-ring binders will cost you $4.11 per binder.

Universal Eco-Friendly Round Ring Natural Kraft Binders

Made with 62% post-consumer recycled content, these Universal Binders are widely available for as little as $2.17 a pop.

Aurora Products Elements Eco-Friendly Round Ring Binder

Aurora Binders boast 70% post-consumer recycled content. However, because the paperboard’s covered with polypropylene, recycling the end product seems a difficult task for the consumer, to say the least. These binders are available widely; 1″-ring binders cost $3.99 at The Green Office.

The Green Office’s 100% Recycled Binders

Eco-office supplies company The Green Office has its own line of binders, made from 100% post-consumer recycled paper. The company claims that the eco-binders’ spine “extends the lifetime of this binder by over three times that of conventional square back binders” — but I haven’t tested out that claim myself. Get them for $5.99 and up each at The Green Office.

Just a couple years ago, a simple organic cotton T-shirt wasn’t so easy to find. Now, with Quicksilver, H&M, and even Forever 21 getting into the green fashion business, eco-friendly T-shirts are a dime a dozen. Still, finding well-fitting and stylish T-shirts made using fair labour can take some work — especially if you’re interested in the latest in eco-friendly and innovative materials and design. Here’s a look at five of the most efficient T-shirts available now:

Revenge Is… a Plastic Bottle T-shirt

The Revenge Is Plastic Bottle T-shirt‘s made of an innovative new fabric — a blend of organic cotton and recycled PET (recycled plastic bottles) — that’s soft, stretchy, and comfortable. A Los Angeles-based company that’s committed to using local labor, Revenge Is prints the company’s eco-angst-y name on the front of each T-shirt. For the back, customers can take their pick of a few progressive messages — i.e. “energy independence” or “taking back our country.” The shirts cost $38 at Revenge Is.

Artevist Community-Designed T-shirt

Threadless fans with a socio-progressive bent can source their outfits at Artevist, a new site that lets designers submit — and members vote on — T-shirt designs with a message. Winning designs — like “Destroy and Deny,” pictured above — get printed on T.S. Designs and Bamboosa T-shirts, all made in the U.S. out of bamboo and organic cotton. T-shirts cost between $27 – $34 at Artevist.

Sub Urban Riot Organic Cotton T-shirt

Sub Urban Riot, a company founded by Pacific Northwest replants who settled in Venice., Calif., offers some unique twists to the regular organic cotton T-shirts, like the extra length and asymmetrical V-neck line in the pink Guns and Roses T-shirt above. The designs often have an ecological message that’s more hip than preachy; they’re available for $14.99 – $39 at Sub Urban Riot and BTC Elements.

Under the Canopy Organic Cotton T-shirt

While Under the Canopy‘s T-shirts are fairly basic, these soft organic cotton tops have the best fit of any T-shirt I’ve ever tried on. Under the Canopy’s use of innovative materials is a topic we’ve written about before here. The T-shirts generally cost $28-$34 at Under the Canopy, but the men’s Vote Ecologically T-shirt‘s on sale for a mere $9.99 at the moment.

Cubist Literature Reclaimed T-shirt

Pre-loved thrift store T-shirts turned inside out + off the wall design + wry slogan = Cubist Literature’s eco-friendly T-shirts. Craig Hunter, who makes these eco-T-shirts, says he likes “the recycling/upcycling factor involved in giving old clothing new life.” Cubist Literature’s upcycled T-shirts are efficient because they avoid the energy-intensive process of re-manufacturing a T-shirt. Plus, since this Etsy store puts the customer directly in touch with the creator-seller, the T-shirts avoid the travel carbon footprint of regular T-shirts. The T-shirts cost between $16 – $35 at Cubist Literature.

A couple other Etsy sellers upcycling pre-loved T-shirts are KMStitchery and devotees.
