BioBag: Biodegradable and Compostable Bags

5149333.jpg BioBags are the first 100% biodegradable alternative to plastic bags. They are made from cornstarch, vegetable oil and other renewable resources.

BioBags makes kitchen “compost bags” to store foods scraps before composting. They can also can be used to store food in the refrigerator. The advantage over plastic, is that these bags will “breath” without leaking. This allows heat and moisture to evaporate, which keeps food fresh longer. Also, unlike plastic bags, there is no risk of Biobags leaching unhealthy residues into your food.

They also make biodegradable “doggy waste” bags (which is actually a great application of bioplastic), and “lawn and left” bags.

For the garden, there is Garden Bio-Film, which is designed to protect your plantings from weeds and stimulate warmth for uniform growth, then return itself to the earth after the plantings reach maturation. The film also serves as a plant protector during frost and wind warnings.

Here is a list of retailers who sell BioBags (scroll down to see the list). Eco-Products seems to have the widest selection.

In Japan, recycling is mandatory. As well, when the city comes to collect the trash, they leave a week’s supply of biodegradable trash bags made from corn starch. Their use is mandatory as well, plastic trash bags are illegal to use. Corn based bio-bags are a normal part of life.
I applaud your efforts in making and selling corn based bio products in the west, but it is a dis-service to imply that it is a new invention, or something created by the great minds in the west. If more Americans realized just how far in the stone ages we are regarding things like this relative to other “modern” countries, perhaps the embarrassment of it would drive faster development, adoption of “new” ideas and usage.
We need less self-congratulation and more forward movement.
Thanks again for your work. When the use of corn bags is mandatory and legally required in the US and Europe, then we’ll have something to brag about.
