Almost Meta-Efficient: Multifunctional Illuminated Furniture
September 9th, 2004 · 2 Comments
The furniture featured here is definitely multifunctional, serving both as a lamp and as a table or chair. It is however, too expensive to be meta-efficient. The chairs below are priced at $2850 and the tables above go for $650-999. The ideas are intriguing though, and if built with eco-effective materials, would qualify as being meta-efficient.

July 28th, 2004 · No Comments
The Oto chair is made from
a single piece of molded beech plywood. It is part of Peter Karpf’s Voxia line
of furniture. The chairs are shaped into their 3D form in one continuous process — this
minimizes cut-away wood and energy used in manufacturing.
The beech plywood comes from a sustainably
managed forest in Belgium close to the production plant. The beech is rotary
cut into peeled veneer, using the entire tree trunk.

These chairs are made from bent maple plywood, using a technique
that consumes 1/8 of the wood normally used in construction.
The seats are webbed with recycled automobile seatbelt material. As you might
expect, this material is extremely strong and does not sag.
Danko produces
a range of similarly designed furniture in their Pennsylvania workshop.

Levy Design: Side Chair
July 28th, 2004 · 1 Comment
This chair, designed by Josh Levy, and inspired by the earlier works of Frank
Gehry, is constructed with recycled corrugated
fiberboard. The surface is soft
and brushed to feel like suede. Corrugated fiberboard consists of
linerboard (the flat exterior) and flute (arched
and sandwiched in between). When the two are adhered together,
they resist bending from all directions.
