The Zonbu is a new, very energy efficient PC. The Zonbu consumes just one third of the power of a typical light bulb. The device runs the Linux operating system using a 1.2 gigahertz processor and 512 meg of RAM. It also contains no moving parts, and does even contain a fan. You can get one for as little as $99, but it does require you to sign up for a two-year subscription.

EcoGeek gives us a run-down on the subscription service:

This service provides you with free, seamless software and firmware updates, up to 100 gigs of storage space, and carbon offsets for your Zonbu usage. If you pay for two years in advance, the price of the unit goes down to $99. The cheapest plan (for 25 gigs of storage) is $12.95. But if you’re switching from an older PC, you could literally save that much off your utility bill.

There’s a blog called Mr Zonbu, which tracks a user’s real-life experience with the machine.

NEC brought Powermate Eco out in 2002, and it is still available from various retailers. The PC was built with non-toxicity and energy efficiency in mind. Its flat-panel screen does not contain boron, commonly found in CRT monitors, and the motherboard is made with lead-free solder. The chassis is made of NEC’s patented NuCycle plastic, which is 100 percent recyclable and uses non-toxic flame retardant.

It contains the Transmeta Crusoe TM5800 chip, which was originally built for low-power notebooks. It emits little heat that it doesn’t require a fan.

Fujitsu makes non-toxic desktop PCs but they are not available in the U.S.

We have more information about this issue on our Desktop Computers page.
