The AKG by Harman K390 NC is a Consumer Reports favorite, thanks to its warm sound, solid bass, and excellent noise reduction.  These earphones can be used with or without the noise cancelation engaged, and they offer a call connect control and microphone so they be used with phones (including Blackberry and iPhone models) as well as with music players.

The AKG earphones also received praise from Cnet for their sound quality and sleek design, as well as the earphones’ effective combination of active noise cancelation and passive sound isolation.  Users’ only real complaint seems to be the bulkiness and weight of the noise-canceling module on the cable.

The MDR-NC300D earphones are the high-end entry in Sony’s line of noise canceling earphones.  They deliver performance to compete with some of the offerings from the audiophile/boutique brands, and users love the sound quality and sleek aluminum design.  The Sony earphones offer wide frequency response, and users can select different sound modes  (movie, bass, or normal) for particular types of listening.

Reviewers from electronics superstore B&H awarded the Sony earphones a 4 out of 5 star rating, including one user who prefers the MDR-NC300D to the much-loved Bose Quiet Comfort models and to any of Sony’s earlier models.  Eight out of twelve Amazon reviewers give the Sony a perfect 5/5 score, in particular raving about the performance during air travel.

Ever since we saw Michael Phelps with his headphones at the Olympics not only have we asked the question, “What’s on Michael Phelps’ iPod?”, but more importantly, “How can we too enjoy music in and around the water?”.  With science continuing to advance in developing underwater headphones, water lovers can now bring their tunes with them and still get quality sound. The Aquapac waterproof headphones have received high ratings and at a retail price of $45.00 are economical. They’ve been tested to an underwater depth of 30 feet, but are not advised for use beyond 10 feet due to pressure on the ear. Underwater headphone testers at iLounge gave the Aquapacs a B rating. They were impressed by the sound quality both above and below the water. The silicone tips create a seal in the ear to prevent water from getting in, though the one downside to the Aquapacs are that they only come with one size tips that will fit average sized ears.

Since we hear differently while submerged in water, this technology completely bypasses the ear drum by converting sound waves into vibrations. There are pros and cons to this type of headphone and after reading reviews by those who have tried them, people either love them or hate them. One of the cons is the price.

One of the cons is the price. The audio bone headphones retail for $189.00. However, these headphones do transfer well to all activities, such as cycling or even listening at work, since it allows you to still be able to hear other things going on around you. Another con is that bone conduction is a less efficient way for us to hear, therefore your iPod or Mp3 will generally need to be on the highest volume setting which can cause the battery to drain faster. Some users report a muffled sound quality, while others like that they can still hear outside noise. Your personal preference would depend upon the intended use. These would be a good option for someone who needs waterproof headphones from time to time, perhaps for sweaty workouts, occasional laps in the pool, or just lying in the bath. They are submersible up to 3 feet underwater. Amazon reviewers complained about the fit with these headphones, though they do come with 3 bud sizes. As one reviewer pointed out, be sure to wipe out your ear so that it’s dry before inserting the buds. This will help create a stronger seal and they won’t slip out as easily. Also, wear the wires on your back and insert the headphones from behind your neck. The sound is of good quality and is well-balanced. Swimman has an excellent reputation among swimmers and they are currently waterproofing 3rd generation iPod shuffles. At $250.00, their system is more than the H2oFriendly, but they do include a waterproof control adapter and their underwater headphone set boasts superior sound quality similar to top-of-the-line non-waterproof headphones. Creative has released these ZEN Aurvana earphones, which are said to block out 90% of ambient noise. The $100 phones are apparently first being released in Singapore. But they should be available in the U.S. soon because they are already featured prominently on Creative’s site. The earphones weigh just 13g, making them the lightest in their class according to Creative, and come with a number of accessories, including two sets of three different size earbuds, an airplane adaptor, cleaning tool, and a rather slick looking travel case.

The name Etymotic means “true to the ear” and is pronounced “et-im-oh-tik.” We’re huge fans of the company’s ER-4P earbuds but it retails for a whopping $330. The ER-6 Isolator earbuds, meanwhile, carries a list price of $130 and is designed to offer most of the performance and features of its pricier sibling for a lot less money.

The ER-6 earbuds come with both silicone rubber and foam eartips, which the user can swap. They’re designed to fit into your ear canals, like earplugs, to block out ambient noise. We judged their effectiveness to be the equal of active or battery-powered noise-canceling headphones. There’s just one caveat: some buyers, particularly those with smaller ear canals, may find the eartip insertion rituals a bit daunting or unpleasant (you really have to jam them in). Also, the rubber eartips in particular have a tendency to attract earwax and will have to be cleaned regularly. But this reviewer found the ER-6 to be highly comfortable–arguably more so than other top in-ear headphones, including the Shure E3c or the Etymotic ER-4P. On the other hand, some CNET editors preferred the fit of Shure’s E3c and Sony’s less expensive MDR-EX71SL.

As with those in-ear models, when we walked or moved, we heard the ER-6′s wires rubbing against our clothing. You get used to the sounds over time, but they’re there, and the ER-6′s very thin and superflexible wires are prone to tangle; ours did, even after we carefully stowed the headphones in their carry pouch.

Ah, but the ER-6′s sound is extraordinarily fine. Because of its noise-isolation attributes, on a roaring NYC subway train, we were able to listen to our iPod at very moderate volume levels; we didn’t have to blast our ears to enjoy our music. Then again, if you want to play loud, the ER-6 can achieve fairly high levels with a portable MP3 player, though the ER-4P was able to play louder.

Listen, and you’ll hear a purity to the sound that few ‘phones can match; we were constantly surprised by the ER-6′s ability to resolve even the most subtle details of our music collection. Bass response is excellent–deep and well defined–for an earbud-type headphone. Bass buffs will be happier with a full-size Grado SR60 ($69), our iPod headphone champs. However, overall the ER-6′s sonics are cleaner and far more resolved than the SR60′s. As always, your buying decision is a matter of identifying your priorities.
