Natural Mattresses

Cotton_Futon1.jpgLet’s face it — naturally produced mattresses are not cheap. Most organic king-sized mattress are priced between $1200-$2500.

We’ve found one store, Soaring Heart, that produces reasonably priced organic mattresses. They offer cotton futons mattresses, inner springs, natural latex and wool toppers.

Their web site is full of advice about natural bedding. Their break-down of the various options available is quite helpful.

You can find a 6″ king-sized natural cotton futon mattress priced at $250.

What’s so great about natural mattresses anyway?

Here are some answers courtesy of Soaring Heart:

Our bodies need to breathe, because as you sleep your body temperature changes. This means that your body heats up and cools off. Natural fibers allow for changes in body temperature, because they do not reflect heat and because they can absorb moisture.

Synthetic fibers do not breathe. Synthetic fibers trap heat, meaning that a sleeping body cannot cool. In order to cool, your body releases moisture in the form of perspiration. Because synthetic fibers trap moisture, the sweat does not evaporate so your body overheats and the bed feels clammy.

The natural fibers we use in our beds are products of the ecosystems that keep us alive and sustain us. On the other hand, the synthetic petrochemical fibers, foams and flame-retardants that fill our material world are sources of toxins, because they are manufactured with toxic chemicals. As synthetic products break down their innate fate, they release the chemicals and gasses used in producing them into the air we breathe.

An essential component of restful sleep is deep breathing. Breathing toxic air from synthetic components in a sleeping system means that when our bodies are restoring themselves in the sleep process, the restoration is polluted with toxic intake. Synthetic fibers continually release molecules of their composition into the air around them, meaning the air you breathe during sleep can contain tiny amounts of petrochemicals, fire retardants, glues and so forth. Again, the potential to defeat restful sleep.
