Here’s a nice, heavy knife block made from a renewable resource.
The bamboo block has a total of 11 slots including one for your sharpening steel, one for your kitchen shears and one large and wide enough for a cleaver.
It sells for $40-$60. Available from: Amazon or Cutlery and More

Surely bacteria can flourish in those slots. It doesn’t matter how clean you think your knives are when you put them back in such a block: bacteria will always find a way if you give it the slightest chance,
For the regular kitchen I think a magnetic strip on the wall out of kids’ reach or just putting the knives in a drawer would be better than this.
Professional cooks would not take this sort of domestic knife holder seriously.
