Family cycling can be a fun and rewarding experience, especially for cyclists who want to share the joy of bicycling with their children. However, there are a few years, typically between the ages of 4 and 9 when family cycling becomes challenging for both parent and child. Even though they’ve outgrown the child bike seat and are riding on their own, it will still be a few years before they’re able to handle a long ride with Mom and Dad. The FollowMe is a device that connects the adult bike with the kids’ bike, turning it into a tandem bicycle. Once the initial set-up is complete, it is simple to take the kids’ bike on and off even during a ride and without tools, so the child can ride solo for a while, then re-attach if the child gets tired or for going through traffic. If the child isn’t attached, the FollowMe folds up over the rear wheel for easy and unnoticeable stowaway. The FollowMe is different from a trailer bike in that you can use the child’s own bike and also still have the ability to connect a child seat or panniers.

The 2 point support at hub level gives a more stable and secure ride than traditional trailer bikes that attach to the seat tube. The FollowMe unit weighs a bit over 8 pounds and is adjustable for kids’ bikes from 12″ to 20″, typically ages 3 to 9. It is a bit pricey at $399, though the safety, convenience and the ability to grow with the child adds to its’ value. FollowMe is based in Switzerland and is sold almost exclusively in Europe, though we did find it at Clever Cycles in Portland, Oregon.

Weehoo I-Go Trailer Bike

The Weehoo I-Go is similar to a recumbent bike and allows the child to ride in safety and comfort with the opportunity to pedal. This would be a great option for long rides, especially if your child tends to fall asleep easy. The seat slides forward and back, adjusting as your child grows from ages 2-9. It includes a 3-point harness system, grips for extra leverage while pedaling, and panniers for storage space. Based in the U.S., Weehoo is available at many bikes shops across North America, retailing for $389.

Adams Trail-A-Bike

Adams Trail-A-Bike Original Shifter Seven

The Adams Trail-A-Bike is the original bike trailer system offering a variety of styles and options including the Original Shifter Seven which introduces the young rider to the wonderful world of shifting with a Shimano 7 speed drivetrain. All of the trail-a-bikes feature a folding design for easy transport and storage. Trail-a-bikes are recommended for kids ages 4 to 6, though they do offer the FolderTwentyFour with a 24″ wheel for ages 7-10. Ranging in price from $200 to over $500 for the tandem model, they are a more reasonable priced option, though won’t last as many years as the FollowMe or the Weehoo.

Kidback Tandems

Another option for family cycling is to use a traditional tandem bike fashioned with a kidback, which is an adjustable bottom bracket that holds another set of pedals higher up on the seat tube so that a child can reach. Kidbacks were popular in the 70s and are beginning to make a comeback. Many tandem bike retailers sell kidback conversion kits. Read more about this option at Sheldon Brown.

Pacific IF Mode Folding Bike

The Pacific IF (integrated folding) Mode bike is a sleek combination of efficiency and artistry. Designed by the same people who brought us the Strida bike, the IF Mode features a svelte look without all the clutter of a traditional folding bike. Pacific Cycles has created this bike with the reluctant commuter or reluctant folding bike commuter in mind by eliminating a few of those tiny annoyances that can come with commuting on a standard bike. But if you like to turn heads, the Pacific IF Mode is up for the job.

The drive train is completely covered, which means no more chain grease on your pants and no more skirt caught in the chain. The unique Swiss Schlumpf 2 gear drive system is located inside the bottom bracket and you shift by tapping a side button with your heel- left side when you need to tackle a hill, right side when you need to giddy up. With full-sized wheels and an S-shaped frame to absorb shocks, the IF Mode is made to ride like a regular bike. The bike folds quickly and easily and doesn’t have all that unsightly chaos of bike parts that other folding bikes seem to have. At 27 pounds it’s not the lightest commuter you can find, but it can roll on the wheels while folded, like a suitcase. Pacific Cycles has succeeded in creating a functional, efficient folding bike that would be great for apartment dwellers, on a college campus, or just tooling around town. The IF Mode folding bike does come with a hefty price tag of $2,500, but this may seem modest in comparison to those surging gas prices.

Roundtail Bike

Is it possible to improve upon the traditional diamond frame of a road bike without losing ground in efficiency? Avid cyclist,entrepreneur, and novelist, Lou Tortola, has given it a shot. After putting in over 3,000 miles on his bike last year and talking with his cycling friends in his age 50+ riding group who stopped riding or would shorten their rides due to discomfort or injuries, Mr. Tortola imagined a bicycle where the “straight to your bum” seat stay is replaced with shock-absorbing rings. The idea is to reduce road vibrations and impact to the rider’s spine. After coming up with a prototype and contacting bike builder, Paul Taylor, the Tortola Roundtail was built.

According to the Roundtail website, which just launched today, the bike design provides ten times the vertical flex and over sixty times the vibration absorption of a traditional frame. Plans are underway to make carbon fiber and titanium road bikes as well as get into the commuter bike and mountain bike market. This design could work really well for bike commuters if it can combine the efficiency of a road bike with a more comfortable ride. One question would be, how much does it weigh? There aren’t any specs yet on the website, but the rings are hollow and made of lightweight aluminum. The components look good too- nice wheels.

Being somewhat of a traditionalist, I am typically skeptical when it comes to new bicycle designs, but the Roundtail works really well. The bike is stiff, lively, and comfortable. What more could you ask for?

Dahon Vector X27

Dahon, maker of affordable folding bikes, has launched their new high-performance line, the Vector series. Perhaps the most efficient bike ever available, the new Dahon Vector X27 merges a folding bike with a high-performance road bike. A hybrid? Perhaps, but one that offers the best of both the commuting world and the road bike world. With a stronger, more stiff frame the Vector X27 replaces Dahon’s previous highly-praised Speed Pro TT. And according to Dahon, it’s even faster. It folds up in 30 seconds and weighs in at 22.5 pounds and uses a SRAM/Shimano 9 speed cassette and 3 speed internal drive for 27 gears. The Vector X27 could fill a niche for those who are commuters during the week and roadies on the weekend.

Dahon Vector X20

Another model in the Dahon line, the Vector X10, won the 2010 Eurobike Award and the top-of-the-line Vector X20 is the lightest (20.2 lbs.) and fastest of the Dahons with the best, high-end components, such as the 20-speed SRAM RED drivetrain and Kinetix Pro 20″ wheel set. The Vector bikes are designed with a patented hydroformed frame which allows for an optimal strength to weight ratio. Though the line has not yet hit the bike shops, NYCeWheels has these bikes ready to reserve and are beginning to post videos of test runs in the meantime. Check out this one of the Dahon Vector X27. You have to admit, Peter’s really flying down the road and it appears he folded it in much less than 30 seconds.

Calfee Bamboo Bike

Could bamboo be the new carbon? Though bamboo bikes have been around since the late 1800s, they’ve long been considered a novelty item, an amusing notion for tree-huggers to get excited about, but who would ever really own one? Well, manufacturers of bamboo bikes are out to change your mind and are picking up speed. Professionally built bamboo bikes are winning awards as competitive performance bikes. Bamboo, the fastest growing plant on earth and thus, one of the most renewable resources, offers a natural vibration damping quality for a smooth, forgiving ride. Bamboo bikes rival metal frames in terms of inherent strength and lightness.

Bamboo Bike Project

In 2005, bike designer and engineer, Craig Calfee of Calfee Design built bamboo bikes as a publicity stunt for his employees and friends. When they all raved about the smoothness of the ride, he decided to go into bamboo bike production. Calfee has since partnered with various organizations and projects to provide bamboo cargo bikes to residents of Ghana with plans to expand to other African nations. Goals of the various projects, such as the Bamboo Bike Project, include alleviating poverty by providing sustainable transportation in rural areas and fostering an African bike building industry. With bamboo readily available in these areas, the start-up cost is low to train the native people on how to build bikes. The Ghana Bamboo Bikes Initiative won last year’s SEED award for entrepreneurship in sustainable design.

Panda Bicycles- Single Speed Commuter- "The One"

This year’s NAHBS featured 6 American bamboo bike builders, including Calfee as well as Panda Bicycles and Boo Bicycles. Aptly named Panda Bicycles builds steel lugged bamboo frames and are committed not only to sustainable design but to using the most earth friendly practices in their bike production. Boo Bicycles, who says the ride quality of bamboo is unmatched, makes bamboo mountain bikes as well as road, fixie, touring, and cyclo-cross. While these bikes may be earth-friendly, most would agree they aren’t budget-friendly. They generally around $2,000 to $3,000. But since bamboo doesn’t rust or fatigue, it lasts longer than metal. Other bamboo bike manufacturers include Bamboo Cycles, Biomega, Zambikes, Renovo, Threepenny Bikes, and Organic Bikes.

Best City Bike NAHBS: Signal Cycles

For the average bike commuter, the idea of owning a handcrafted, custom fit bicycle used to be just a pipe dream. But with the increasing popularity of the annual North American Handmade Bike Show (NAHBS) sales of custom made bikes are rising and interest is growing. The 2011 NAHBS took place last month in Austin, TX showcasing bike builders from around the world including those who design commuter and city bikes. Portland-based Signal Cycles took home the Best City Bike award.

Best In Show At NAHBS: Dinucci Cycles

Dinucci Cycles, another Portland bike builder, won Best in Show with this sleek commuter bike. Though Mark Dinucci is “too busy building frames to construct a web site”, you can see more pictures here. There’s no question that handmade bikes are of superior quality, in terms of both materials and construction, than mass-produced factory bikes. The cost of a handmade bike can start at a reasonable $2,000 or can run upwards to $15,000 depending on the designer and how customized the bike is. A custom made bike can be designed to fit your body shape and riding style, as well as be painted and adorned with components according to personal specifications. Handmade bikes are truly works of art built to sustain a lifetime of riding.

Vanilla Bicycles

Sacha White, an artisan and pioneer of handcrafted bikes, started Vanilla Bicycles which currently has a waiting list of over 5 years for one of his creations. With superior craftsmanship and attention to detail, one of White’s bikes would look just as good hanging on your living room wall as it would in the bike lane.

Best Lugged Frame At NAHBS: Bilenky Cycle Works

Bilenky Cycle Works took home the Best Lugged Frame Award with this mixte city bike. Founder Stephen Bilenky has owned his Philadelphia bike shop since 1983 winning numerous awards over the years and specializing in road, city, touring, and tandem bikes, as well as frame restoration and repair.

Independent Fabrication Super Commuter

The success of the NAHBS has even helped catapult handmade bikes into mainstream reviews. Bicycling.com recently released their annual Bike Buyer’s Guide for 2011 and the Super Commuter from Massachusetts-based Independent Fabrication made their list of best commuter bikes and one of their “favorite custom builders”. Independent Fabrication was a winner at this year’s show with Best TIG Welded Frame.

The best commuter bikes for 2011 present a wide variety of styles and components to best suit personal needs. Bike manufacturers have answered the call to the increased population of bike commuters by designing full lines of commuter specific bikes. Though many of these commuter bikes aren’t cheap, if you’re giving up the car in favor of the most efficient form of transportation, you will of course save money. It is recommended that if you only have it in your budget to buy a cheap department store bike, then you’re better off finding a high quality used bike. But most of all, you want a well-fitted commuter bicycle with the best components that will make you want to ride every day. No need to worry about purchasing more accessories, the Uptown 8 already comes equipped with a full chainguard, rear rack, fenders, kickstand, bell, and hub-generated front and rear LED lights. It even comes with its’ own integrated lock, though it’s recommended you have a good quality u-lock. Named by Bicycling Magazine as the Commuter Bike of the Year, the geometry of this bike puts the rider at a comfortable upright position, yet not too upright to be able to handle some hills. The Breezer Uptown 8 also comes in a step-through model.

Who it’s for: Those who don’t want to mess with buying commuter bike components. Those who like a comfortable and sturdy, yet efficient ride and will make use of all the utility features. Those with a relatively short commute.

Who it’s not for: Those who do enjoy building their own bike. At just under 32 pounds, the weight is reasonable with all the attached accessories, yet could still be a consideration for those who take their bikes on public transit or up and down stairs or if you have a particularly hilly commute.

Electra Ticino 8D Commuter Bike

Electra Ticino 8D Commuter Bike

Known for their beach cruisers and Dutch-influenced style bikes, Electra has now designed a line of bikes based on the classic French constructeur touring bikes. Marrying retro styling with the latest components, the Ticino 8D features an aluminum frame with a steel lugged fork, 8 speed Shimano 2300 drivetrain with rapidfire shifters, a moustache handlebar, faux-leather saddle, and alloy fenders. You will need to add a rack if you carry things on your bike. The upright seated position allows for a cushy ride, while the 700c wheel size give it oomph. The Electra Ticino 8D got tentative praise from the Bike Snob, which is no easy feat, calling it “stable, yet reasonably quick” and light enough to carry up steps. The bike weighs about 25 pounds.

Who it’s for: Those who are clamoring for the retro look. Cyclists who prefer a more upright seated position and need a commuter bike that can still be lifted easily.

Who it’s not for: Those who prefer a modern looking bike. The slack geometry is not for cyclists who like a riding position similar to a road bike.

Trek Belleville 2011 Commuter Bike

Trek Belleville 2011 Commuter Bike

Part of Trek’s urban eco-design line, the Belleville has been designed with an eye on the environmental impact of the bike through the birth, life, and after-life. The Belleville has attracted a lot of attention with it’s vintage look, steel frame and solid geometry. This bike is commuter ready with chainguard, dual racks, hub-powered front and rear lights, and fenders. It has 3 speeds with an internally-geared Shimano Nexus hub. Car Free in Philly has a good list of pros and cons on the Trek Belleville. It also comes in a true mixte style frame for the ladies.

Who it’s for: Those with commutes on the short side. Those who prefer a steel frame. Commuters who don’t need to lift the bike too much- it’s 40 pounds and who tend to haul a lot of stuff. Those who are looking for a commuter bike already equipped with all the bells and whistles.

Who it’s not for: If you live on the top floor. Those who have hills on their commute. Minimalists.

Novara Big Buzz Bike

Novara Big Buzz Commuter Bike

The Novara Big Buzz from REI is a hybrid style commuter bike merging mountain bike geometry with road bike tubing. It runs on a 9 speed Shimano Sram drivetrain with Sram twist shifters. The lightweight aluminum frame, 700c wheel size with puncture resistant Vittoria Randonneur tires, and disc brakes offer stability and maneuverability with the feel of a road bike. Though there aren’t many reviews on this bike, reviewers at REI have given it an average 4.4 star rating with it’s best uses for great handling as a commuter bike and the biggest complaint being too heavy.

Who it’s for: The budget-conscious- the Novara Big Buzz is currently on sale at REI for$450- though keep in mind the expense if you need to add a rack and/or lights. Those are looking for a commuter bike that rides more like a road bike and has simple components. Commuters who don’t need all the extras or want to add their own.

Who it’s not for: Those who like a more cushy ride. May not be comfortable for very long commutes.

Jamis Commuter 3 Bike

Jamis makes a high quality and well-liked line of commuter bikes at an affordable price range of $390 to $800. The Jamis Commuter 3 bike features an aluminum frame, a Shimano Nexus 7 speed hub with revo-shift twist shifters, 700c wheel size, fenders, and full chain guard. Step up to the Commuter 4, pictured at the top of this post, to get the 8 speed with a rear rack and hub-powered headlight. Bicycling magazine gave the Jamis Commuter 1 a best for beginners thumbs up and the Commuter 3 is featured on Sheldon Brown’s website.

Who it’s for: Those who want a basic, dependable commuter bike without breaking the bank. At a not bad weight of 28 pounds, would be good for apartment dwellers.

Who it’s not for: Those who want the forgiveness of a steel frame.

Surly Cross Check Bike

Cyclocross bikes are a popular choice for hardcore commuters as they are designed to be fast, yet can take the abuse of rough off-road conditions. The Surly Cross Check is a do everything, versatile bike for everyday use. It can go from the commute to a weekend race. The steel frame absorbs the road chatter and provides stability for longer commutes. The Surly Cross Check features a Shimano Tiagra 9 speed drivetrain with bar end shifters, 700c wheel size, and cantilever brakes. Surly boasts the Fatties Fit Fine (FFF) clearance for fat tires and fender space. Springfield Cyclist has a good hands-on review.

Who it’s for: Those who want the versatility of a cyclocross bike for commuting. Bike lovers who want to customize their bike themselves according to their personal needs. Those who need the stability of a steel frame bike for longer commutes. Those who encounter hills on their commutes or use public transit.

Who it’s not for: Those who don’t want to “mess” with their bike or who don’t have a lot of money to spend on their ride.

SolaRoad Solar Bike Path

What could make bike riding even more efficient? How about a bike path embedded with solar panels to produce clean energy while encouraging people to get on their bikes? The town of Krommenie in the Netherlands, just north of Amsterdam, will be receiving the SolaRoad bike path, scheduled to open in 2012.

Developed by the Province of North Holland, the Ooms Avenhorn Group and Imtech, the solar bike path will be constructed with a concrete base, topped with a 1 cm thick layer of crystalline silicon solar cells. The solar cells will then be protected by a thick, heavy-duty glass surface strong enough to drive a truck over it. The SolaRoad is estimated to generate 50 kw hours of electricity per square meter per year which will be used to power street lights, traffic systems, and perhaps even households along the SolaRoad system.

The SolaRoad project is part of the Dutch government’s commitment to renewable energy. Their vision is to have an entire network of roads encapsulated with solar panels throughout the country. In the meantime, it will be interesting to learn what cyclists in North Holland think of riding on this glass-surfaced bike path.

Despite misconceptions, electric bikes allow commuters to increase their range safely and arrive to the office smelling fresh, while still getting exercise (yes, you still have to pedal an electric bike) and reducing their carbon footprint. They also continually beat cars in commuter races. An efficient electric bike may be just the push one needs to make the decision to give up the car and commute by bike. Electric bikes are also efficient for running errands, towing things (like kids), and for the elderly or for those with physical ailments. It can be difficult to navigate your way through all the options and styles available in an electric bike so we’ve done it for you. What To Look For In An Electric Bike

The choice of an electric bike is quite personal, depending upon budget and the intended use. In it’s simplest definition an electric bike is a basic traditional bike with 3 things added to it: a motor, a battery, and a controller that administers the power. There are 2 different types of controllers: throttle and pedal-assist. The throttle-based system will give you the option to ride without pedaling. The pedal-assist is activated by pedaling, but you can control the level of assistance you get through a control panel on the handlebar. Some people find the pedal-assist more simple to use and more true to being a bicycle, while others prefer the throttle and like the idea of having moments where you don’t have to pedal. The best advice is to try each one out at your local bike shop to see which type you prefer.

When it comes to price the thing to keep in perspective is what you’ll be using it for. If you’re looking for an efficient commuter, then in comparison to a car, an electric bike is a bargain, not to mention all you’ll save in gas. If you’re looking for something strictly for recreation, then cost may be more of a consideration. It is also suggested that you purchase a high quality lock or three if you’ll be leaving it out and about and if the battery is removable bring it with you though some come with their own battery locks.

Kalkhoff Electric Bikes

Made in Germany, Kalkhoff Bikes are perhaps the Mercedes of electric bikes. Kalkhoff has been providing European cyclists with high quality bikes for years and now they are available in the U.S.  NYCeWheels says the Pro Connect is “one of the most efficient electric bikes on the market”. Kalkhoff uses the Panasonic Pedelec brushless motor, the highest rated electric motor currently available. A to B gives the Kalkhoff 5 out of 5 stars. The integrated maintenance-free motor offers 3 levels of pedal-activated assistance using 300 watts with a top speed of 25 mph. At the moderate setting, you can expect to get 50 miles from a full charge. Bicycle purists like that the Kalkhoff looks like a regular bike. With a lightweight aluminum frame, Shimano components, and Continental puncture-resistant tires, the motor isn’t the only thing that’s top notch about this bike. Other features include a hydraulic braking system, on-board computer with speedometer, and front and rear integrated lighting.

So what’s not to like about the Kalkhoff? How about the price. A true case of if you want the best, you’re going to pay for it, the Pro Connect Sport 300 is listed at $3,899.00. However, this is their most expensive model. Other e-bikes in the Kalkhoff fleet go for around the $3,000 mark and the Pro Connect Sport 250 2009 model is currently on sale for $2,899.00. Kalhoff does offer free shipping and a 2 year warranty.

eZee LiV Electric Bike

eZee LiV Electric Bike

The eZee LiV offers an affordable, yet reliable option for a lightweight, simple to operate electric bike. It has a range of 15-30 miles and a top speed of 20 mph. With a 200 watt brushed motor, it may not be the most powerful machine on the electric bike block, but it beats the others at a price of $1,199.00. NYCeWheels recommends this bike as best value for commuting or recreational riding if you have moderate hills and don’t plan on pulling anything or carrying a large load. eZee has a full line of throttle activated electric bikes priced under $2,000. The eZee LiV uses more basic components than the other bikes in the eZee line. It features a 3 speed drivetrain, front and rear lights, and mudguards.

Kona has added a 250 watt Pedelec motor with a 24 volt Samsung Lihium-Ion battery to it’s popular Ute cargo bike offering up one of the first electric-assisted bikes for utilitarian use. This would make a great bike for long distance touring, those who want to ditch the car to run errands, or family bike rides. The Schwinn Tailwind flaunts a feature that the other electric bikes don’t have: the Toshiba battery designed specifically for this bike can recharge in an astounding 30 minutes as opposed to the usual 4 hour recharging time. The 6 pound battery can be removed easily from the rear fender rack and features the latest in lithium polymer technology. According to NYCeWheels, the lithium polymer Schwinn battery pack has about 1.4 times the power to weight ratio than lithium ion, discharges at a more consistent voltage, and has a longer life expectancy. It offers a range of 25-30 miles, depending on riding style and conditions.

The sophisticated brushless motor is designed to assist the rider, not take over. The motor kicks in after pedaling begins and shuts off when the brake is applied. Schwinn designed the Tailwind to offer a longer range for the traditional bike rider, yet still remaining true to the classic bike design. It does not offer regenerative braking, but it may be the perfect transition for those who prefer the old school look as opposed to the futuristic appearance of some of the other electric bikes. An entry from last year’s list, the Sanyo Eneloop continues to be a solid entry for a high-tech electric bike. Eneloop means that the regenerative brake system recharges the battery, so pressing on the rear brake lever actually generates energy. The 250 watt brushless motor supports 2 modes of pedal-assist plus an auto mode. Standard mode output matches the energy output of the rider. Power-Up mode doubles the energy output (for hills), while the auto mode automatically switches between these 2 modes depending upon riding conditions. The Sanyo Eneloop may appeal more to the female commuter because it’s, well… pretty. Similar to the styling of a Dutch city bike, the step-through frame makes it easy to get on and off. Range is 17-35 miles depending on the mode. Customer reviews on the Sanyo Eneloop are glowing, raving that the bike is quiet, smooth, and doesn’t feel like you’re riding an electric bike. Trek has thrown it’s hat into the electric bike ring and maybe just the catalyst to bring the lycra set and the commuters together. They’ve turned their standard Valencia commuter bike into a electric assist hybrid with a 350 watt brushless BionX rear hub motor and regenerative braking. Trek has added electric motors to some of their other bikes as well, such as the FX and the Transport- you’ll notice a plus sign next to these to indicate the hybrid model.  Four different pedal-assist modes vary from 25% assistance to 200% assistance. In regenerative mode, you can add on average a 10% increase in battery capacity. There aren’t many reviews out yet on the Trek e-bikes, but you can read specs about them here and some first impressions by users at bike forums here.

A2B Electric Bikes by Ultra Motor

Don’t be fooled by it’s size. The A2B electric bikes by Ultra Motor pack a powerful punch with a 500 watt motor, 7 speeds, and high torque for hill climbing. Treehugger says it has “the heart of a bicycle and the soul of a scooter”. You can read their full review here. The lithium-ion battery is fully integrated into the downtube. The range is 20 miles on a single charge, but that can be extended to 40 miles with the purchase of an optional second battery. Top speed is 20 mph. The throttle is on the handlebar, meaning you can pedal or not. It does weigh in at a hefty 72 pounds so it may be better for short commutes, recreational fun or a cool option for college students to get around campus. The A2B Metro sells for around $2,700.00.

IZip Metro

2011 IZip Metro Electric Bike

Now wouldn’t this be fun to zip down to the grocery store? It features a 500 watt brushless hub motor and lithium-ion battery with a top speed of 20 mph and a range of 20-35 miles. It uses both pedal-assist and throttle power and weighs in at 55 pounds. The IZip Metro retails for $2,299.00.

Giant- Giant made the ever classic Lafree electric bike, which has since been discontinued, but they continue to make the Twist Freedom and Twist Express.

EcoBike- Using both a pedal-assist and manual throttle, the EcoBike is one of the easiest electric bikes to operate. They offer 3 models around the $1,500 range.

Portland, Oregon continues to set the standard of being a bike and pedestrian friendly city by building a 700 foot bridge over Interstate 5 that will allow users to travel from the Lair Hill neighborhood to the South Waterfront District. The Gibbs Street bridge is only for walking and bike riding. Portland bike commuters will benefit from taxes paid by car owners, as, according to Bike Portland, a percentage of the cost of the bridge will come from gas tax and new vehicle registration.

Building is scheduled to begin this month and is expected to be finished in one year. The bridge will be alongside the aerial tram, just one segment of Portland’s cutting edge public transportation system which also includes MAX Light Rail. To reduce cost, planners went with a steel box girder style bridge. The structure will include stairways and an elevator. The plan also includes improvements to pedestrian crosswalks around the area.
