Thanks to abandoned railway lines and canal paths, the rails to trails movement in the U.S. has taken off. These trails offer gentle grades with beautiful scenery that you couldn’t see by car as they pass through towns that are now being revitalized due to bicycle tourism. Many states are working on building a network of bike routes to provide more continuous car-free cycling. Here is a sampling of the longest bike routes in the U.S.

Great Allegheny Passage (GAP)/ C&O Canal Towpath

A cyclist could ride from Washington D.C to Pittsburgh, PA without encountering one car along the way. The 150-mile Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) runs from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Cumberland, Maryland where it meets up with the C&O Canal Path for another 185 miles to the nation’s capitol. The GAP bike route is built on the abandoned lines of railroads, such as the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie and the Western Maryland Railroad, that helped shape this area of the U.S. Though some sections may be more challenging to the beginning rider, the GAP trail is made of crushed limestone and follows a gentle grade despite crossing the Eastern Continental Divide. The steepest grade along the route is westbound from Cumberland to Deal at 1.75%. Cyclists will find plenty of diversions along the way with trailside bed and breakfasts, cafes, campsites, and bike shops as well as opportunities for whitewater rafting and canoeing.

The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal began operation in 1831. Today the canal is virtually drained, but the towpath has been claimed as a National Historic Park and used as a bicycle and hiking trail. Evidence of the canal’s heyday can be found along the route with aqueducts, canal locks, and lock houses. Though the C&O route is generally level, the ride is more rough in comparison with the GAP trail and other rail trails. The towpath was built for mules after all, not trains. For more on the GAP trail, visit the Allegheny Trail Alliance and for more about the C&O Canal Towpath visit BikeWashington.org.

Katy Trail

Currently, the longest rails to trails bike route in the U.S. is the Katy Trail which runs across most of Missouri from St. Louis to Clinton. Plans are in the works to extend the trail to a suburb of Kansas City. Cyclists can enjoy 237 miles of nicely maintained crushed limestone with loads of amenities and side trips along the way from wineries to cafes to bed and breakfasts. Shuttle services are available for one-way trips. Popular events are routinely scheduled along the Katy Trail including the popular Hermann Oktoberfest and scheduled group rides and cycling tours. Ideal for beginners and advanced cyclists alike, the Katy Trail is mostly flat with a gradual grade from Clinton to Sedalia. Much of the trail follows the Missouri River.
Olympic Discovery Trail

Though the John Wayne Pioneer Trail is the longest bike trail in Washington state at 145 miles, current indefinite tunnel closures have segmented the trail and made detours through towns- with cars. The 126-mile Olympic Discovery Trail serves as a western extension of the John Wayne Pioneer Trail beginning at Port Townsend and ending at the coastal town of La Push. Traveling between the Olympia Mountains and the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the trail uses historic corridors and trestles of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. Forty miles of the trail between Sequim and Port Angeles are paved while the rest is gravel. Plans to continue the paving project are underway. Besides taking in the breathtaking views, there are plenty of other excursions such as kayaking, white water rafting, and side trails for more cycling or mountain biking. The town of Port Angeles offers unique restaurants, shops, and wineries, and, yes, is a mecca for the Twilight fans. Check out the OlympicDiscoveryTrail.com for more information.

Erie Canalway Trail

The Erie Canalway Trail runs along the towpaths of New York’s historic canals: Erie, Oswego, Cayuga-Seneca, and Champlain. When complete, the Erie Canalway Trail will be a continuous 365-mile car-free bike trail between Albany and Buffalo. The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor will eventually link with other trails to provide 524 miles of consecutive trail riding. With 75% of the trail now finished, the longest section is 114 miles from Buffalo to Newark on a combination surface of paved and crushed stone. The next longest section would be 86 miles from Albany to Little Falls just east of Utica. Towns along the Erie Canal are experiencing a renaissance thanks to the development of this trail. Historic sites, canal locks, parks, and restaurants are just a few of the side trips available along the route. Mostly flat, the trail suits all ability levels with a few rolling hills and a gradual climb west of Albany.
Cowboy Trail

With its’ rich railroad history, translating into abandoned rail corridors, the Midwest has a wealth of long distance car-free bike routes which is where the rails to trails movement began. The Cowboy Trail in Nebraska is just behind the Katy Trail with 195 miles currently open. Another 126 miles are under construction which will make for 321 miles of continuous trail meandering across the Nebraska prairie land. Near Valentine you can cross a 148-foot railroad bridge. The trail is named for the Cowboy line coined by the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. Though paved in some sections, the Cowboy Trail is made mostly of crushed stone and well-maintained. Plenty of conveniences and bike support can be found along the route. To plan your trip visit BikeCowboyTrail.com.

There’s a growing trend happening in the Midwest and across the country. With the support of local and regional governments, long distance bike routes are being converted from abandoned rail corridors in an attempt to connect a nationwide network of trails most commonly referred to as rails-to-trails. These trails are generally flat or follow a gentle grade, perfect for beginning or casual riders, yet, with the option for traveling long distances, can also challenge the more advanced cyclist. Rail trails travel through many towns which stimulates the local economy and raises cycling awareness. Of course the best part of these trails is- NO CARS ALLOWED, providing a safe and annoyance-free alternative to commuting and long-distance cycling.

The Rails to Trails Conservancy is a non-profit organization dedicated to the continuing development and preservation of this bike route infrastructure and is the best resource to learn more about individual trails. The Midwest offers some of the longest rail trails with a variety of picturesque landscapes and the proverbial quaint towns to explore. Following are a sampling of a few of the more popular and award-winning rail trails found in the Midwest.

Katy Trail- Missouri

Katy Trail State Park Missouri

Running along the old Missouri-Kansas-Texas (MKT or “katy”) route, the Katy Trail is the nation’s longest rails-to-trails project with 237 miles of crushed limestone. Following the Missouri River, the Katy trail offers some beautiful scenery from rolling farm fields and prairie lands to river bluffs. History lovers will enjoy visiting the preserved railroad cars and restored train depots along the route. The section from St. Louis to Boonville is part of the Lewis & Clark Bicycle Trail which extends all the way to Clarkston, Washington, so riders can follow in the footsteps of the historic journey of the famous explorers.

Despite the diverse landscape across Missouri, the Katy Trail rides reasonably flat and is well-maintained. This, along with the abundance of amenities, from restaurants and grocery stores to shuttle services and bike support, makes the Katy Trail an excellent choice for beginning touring cyclists. Wine enthusiasts can visit one of the many wineries along the route. You can then rest up for your next day of riding at one of the myriad of Bed and Breakfasts. Plans are underway to make a link from Clinton to Kansas City using the old Rock Island rail line. The Katy Trail has a fantastic website for you to thoroughly plan your visit.

Cowboy Trail- Nebraska

Cowboy Trail Nebraska

Set to rival the Katy Trail is the Cowboy Trail in Nebraska which, when completed, will stretch for 321 miles. Currently, 195 miles of the trail are completed with some paved sections and the rest in crushed stone. The route uses an old rail line from the Chicago & Northwestern railroad who called this section of track the Cowboy Line.

Meandering through a variety of scenic landscapes, the trail crosses over 200 bridges including a 148 foot high railroad bridge. Communities along the way have embraced the development of the Cowboy Trail with amenities including camping, bed and breakfasts, restaurants, and bike shops. For more on the Cowboy Trail see bikecowboytrail.com.

Paul Bunyan State Trail- Minnesota

With the final stages of paving completed in 2010, the Paul Bunyan State Trail is one of the longest paved rails to trails project in the U.S. with 110 miles of continuously paved trail. Beginning in Brainerd, the trail follows an abandoned Burlington Northern Railway line north to Lake Bemidji State Park where the Blue Ox Trail can be picked up and followed for another 110 miles to the Canadian border

Cyclists can stop at any one of the 15 communities along the route for food, camping, and lodging or to take a dip in one of Minnesota’s lakes. The trail is for non-motorized use except in the winter when snowmobiles are permitted. With other trail extension projects underway, the Paul Bunyan State Trail is geared up to become one of America’s longest rail-trails.
Illinois Prairie Path

Illinois Prairie Path

Don’t let the name fool you. The Illinois Prairie Path is a fusion of both rural and urban settings and is popular with bike commuters. Found in the western suburbs of Chicago, the Illinois Prairie Path follows the lines of the old Chicago, Aurora, and Elgin Electric Railroad that carried early 20th century passengers from the suburbs to downtown Chicago. With 3 main branches and 2 spurs, the trail totals 61 miles with a combination of paved sections and crushed stone. The Wheaton branch is the most urban as it follows through the shopping district and shares part of the Metra corridor, making it convenient for downtown Chicago commuters to combine bike commuting with train commuting. The Aurora and Elgin branches offer a more rural experience. The Illinois Praire Path connects with another Illinois rail-trail, the Fox River Trail which runs from Algonquin to Oswego for another 37 miles of riding. Click here for more on the Illinois Prairie Path.

Little Miami Scenic Trail- Ohio

Little Miami Scenic Trail- Ohio

Before Minnesota finished paving the Paul Bunyan State Trail, the Little Miami Scenic Trail in Southwestern Ohio was the longest paved bike trail in the country extending 78 miles from Springfield, Ohio south to Milford with plans to connect it to the Ohio River Trail which can take riders on to Cincinnati and the Ohio River. The trail runs along the remnants of the Little Miami Railroad who began operations in the mid-1800s and later merged with the Columbus and Xenia Railroad providing an important route between Cincinnati and Columbus.

Cyclists will find this largely wooded route to be nicely shaded with plenty of opportunities for side trips including the Caesar Creek State Park and charming towns who cater to the trail riders. In the southern section you can travel across the Jeremiah Morrow bridge, a 239-foot arch truss bridge that is the highest in Ohio.
Wabash Trace Nature Trail- Iowa

Wabash Trace Nature Trail Iowa

The Wabash Trace Nature Trail extends from Council Bluffs, Iowa 63 miles south to Blanchard on the Iowa/Missouri border. The trail runs along a former corridor of the Wabash Railroad, an historic railway that connected the farms of the Midwest with the major cities of Chicago, Detroit, and Buffalo. Great for beginners and seasoned cyclists alike, the Wabash Trace Nature Trail is well-maintained by volunteers. The trail is surfaced with crushed stone with about 4 miles of concrete.

Praised by Outside Magazine as one of the “prettiest trails” in America, the Wabash Trace Nature Trail is popular for its’ tree-lined borders making most of the trail shady and comfortable in the summer. The trail has also become popular for the weekly Thursday night Taco Ride which attracts thousands of cyclists for an evening of recreation followed by socializing, margaritas, and, yes, tacos.
Prairie Spirit Trail- Kansas

Prairie Spirit Trail- Kansas

The Prairie Spirit Trail in eastern Kansas is a 51 mile ride through rolling farms, prairie land, and friendly small towns. The first north/south rail line in Kansas, built by the Leavenworth, Lawrence, and Fort Gibson Railroad and later became part of the Santa Fe, this route offers much in the way of wildlife viewing as well as a variety of ecosystems that one normally wouldn’t think they could find in Kansas (yes, there are wooded areas).

The Prairie Spirit Trail is mostly composed of crushed limestone, but is paved through the towns. In Ottawa the trail connects to the Flint Hills Nature Trail which is currently under development and when finished will stretch 117 miles from east to west across the state to Herington. Since public land is scarce in Kansas, Kansans take great pride in their development and preservation of public bike trails. The trail is well taken care of by volunteers. Visit the Prairie Spirit Trail website and BikePrairieSpirit.com for more information.

The past year has seen an abundance of bike manufacturers entering into the electric bike arena with slick, lightweight and powerful bikes. Despite misconceptions, electric bikes allow commuters to increase their range safely and arrive to the office smelling fresh, while still getting exercise (yes, you still have to pedal an electric bike) and reducing their carbon footprint. They also continually beat cars in commuter races. An efficient electric bike may be just the push one needs to make the decision to give up the car and commute by bike. Electric bikes are also efficient for running errands, towing things (like kids), and for the elderly or for those with physical ailments. It can be difficult to navigate your way through all the options and styles available in an electric bike so we’ve done it for you. By studying forums and sites such as NYCeWheels, A to B Magazine, BikeForums.net, and Electric Bike Report, we’ve come up with a list of the best electric bikes for 2011.

What To Look For In An Electric Bike

The choice of an electric bike is quite personal, depending upon budget and the intended use. In it’s simplest definition an electric bike is a basic traditional bike with 3 things added to it: a motor, a battery, and a controller that administers the power. There are 2 different types of controllers: throttle and pedal-assist. The throttle-based system will give you the option to ride without pedaling. The pedal-assist is activated by pedaling, but you can control the level of assistance you get through a control panel on the handlebar. Some people find the pedal-assist more simple to use and more true to being a bicycle, while others prefer the throttle and like the idea of having moments where you don’t have to pedal. The best advice is to try each one out at your local bike shop to see which type you prefer.

When it comes to price the thing to keep in perspective is what you’ll be using it for. If you’re looking for an efficient commuter, then in comparison to a car, an electric bike is a bargain, not to mention all you’ll save in gas. If you’re looking for something strictly for recreation, then cost may be more of a consideration. It is also suggested that you purchase a high quality lock or three if you’ll be leaving it out and about and if the battery is removable bring it with you though some come with their own battery locks.

Kalkhoff Electric Bikes

Kalkhoff Pro Connect Sport 300

Made in Germany, Kalkhoff Bikes are perhaps the Mercedes of electric bikes. Kalkhoff has been providing European cyclists with high quality bikes for years and now they are available in the U.S. NYCeWheels says the Pro Connect is “one of the most efficient electric bikes on the market”. Kalkhoff uses the Panasonic Pedelec brushless motor, the highest rated electric motor currently available. A to B gives the Kalkhoff 5 out of 5 stars. The integrated maintenance-free motor offers 3 levels of pedal-activated assistance using 300 watts with a top speed of 25 mph. At the moderate setting, you can expect to get 50 miles from a full charge. Bicycle purists like that the Kalkhoff looks like a regular bike. With a lightweight aluminum frame, Shimano components, and Continental puncture-resistant tires, the motor isn’t the only thing that’s top notch about this bike. Other features include a hydraulic braking system, on-board computer with speedometer, and front and rear integrated lighting.

So what’s not to like about the Kalkhoff? How about the price. A true case of if you want the best, you’re going to pay for it, the Pro Connect Sport 300 is listed at $3,899.00. However, this is their most expensive model. Other e-bikes in the Kalkhoff fleet go for around the $3,000 mark and the Pro Connect Sport 250 2009 model is currently on sale for $2,899.00. Kalhoff does offer free shipping and a 2 year warranty.

Check out the Kalkhoff line of electric bikes here or for information on trying one out click here.

The eZee LiV offers an affordable, yet reliable option for a lightweight, simple to operate electric bike. It has a range of 15-30 miles and a top speed of 20 mph. With a 200 watt brushed motor, it may not be the most powerful machine on the electric bike block, but it beats the others at a price of $1,199.00. NYCeWheels recommends this bike as best value for commuting or recreational riding if you have moderate hills and don’t plan on pulling anything or carrying a large load. eZee has a full line of throttle activated electric bikes priced under $2,000. The eZee LiV uses more basic components than the other bikes in the eZee line. It features a 3 speed drivetrain, front and rear lights, and mudguards.

2011 Kona Electric Ute Cargo Bike

2011 Kona Electric Ute Cargo Bike

Kona has added a 250 watt Pedelec motor with a 24 volt Samsung Lihium-Ion battery to it’s popular Ute cargo bike offering up one of the first electric-assisted bikes for utilitarian use. This would make a great bike for long distance touring, those who want to ditch the car to run errands, or family bike rides. In full power mode the Kona Electric Ute supplies an 18 mile range, 35 miles in normal mode, and 62 miles in economy mode. It offers quality Shimano components, an acacia wood deck, Kona pannier bag, fenders, and a lifetime warranty on the aluminum butted frame. For a detailed review see MyCargoBike.net where criticisms include the use of a front v-brake as opposed to a disc brake and a small, but continuous electric whine of the motor. Pros included a well-proportioned, lightweight design and a conveniently integrated battery that can be removed for charging. At $2599.00, the Kona Electric Ute is considered to be competitively priced for an electric cargo bike.

Schwinn Electric Bike: Tailwind

Schwinn Electric Bike: Tailwind

The Schwinn Tailwind flaunts a feature that the other electric bikes don’t have: the Toshiba battery designed specifically for this bike can recharge in an astounding 30 minutes as opposed to the usual 4 hour recharging time. The 6 pound battery can be removed easily from the rear fender rack and features the latest in lithium polymer technology. According to NYCeWheels, the lithium polymer Schwinn battery pack has about 1.4 times the power to weight ratio than lithium ion, discharges at a more consistent voltage, and has a longer life expectancy. It offers a range of 25-30 miles, depending on riding style and conditions.

The sophisticated brushless motor is designed to assist the rider, not take over. The motor kicks in after pedaling begins and shuts off when the brake is applied. Schwinn designed the Tailwind to offer a longer range for the traditional bike rider, yet still remaining true to the classic bike design. It does not offer regenerative braking, but it may be the perfect transition for those who prefer the old school look as opposed to the futuristic appearance of some of the other electric bikes. The Schwinn Tailwind MSRP is $2,679.00.

Sanyo Eneloop Electric Bike

An entry from last year’s list, the Sanyo Eneloop continues to be a solid entry for a high-tech electric bike. Eneloop means that the regenerative brake system recharges the battery, so pressing on the rear brake lever actually generates energy. The 250 watt brushless motor supports 2 modes of pedal-assist plus an auto mode. Standard mode output matches the energy output of the rider. Power-Up mode doubles the energy output (for hills), while the auto mode automatically switches between these 2 modes depending upon riding conditions. The Sanyo Eneloop may appeal more to the female commuter because it’s, well… pretty. Similar to the styling of a Dutch city bike, the step-through frame makes it easy to get on and off. Range is 17-35 miles depending on the mode. Customer reviews on the Sanyo Eneloop are glowing, raving that the bike is quiet, smooth, and doesn’t feel like you’re riding an electric bike. Check out NYCeWheel’s review here.

The Sanyo Eneloop currently sells on Amazon for $1,499.99.

Dahon Boost Folding Electric Bike

Dahon Boost Folding Electric Bike

For commuters who need to lug their bikes up stairs or maneuver it onto public transportation, a folding electric bike such as the Dahon Boost would be a good choice. It offers all of the advantages of an electric-assisted bike at a weight of only 43 pounds. Dahon is a leader in high quality folding bikes. The Boost folds down to the same size as their 20″ folding bike in 15 seconds. The 250 watt brushless motor offers up 3 pedal-assist modes. Features an integrated rear rack, front and rear lighting, and a control panel on the handlebar. It can go about 30 miles on a charge. With a step-through frame and adjustable seat and handlebars, this bike serves as a versatile commuter bike.

The Dahon Boost sells for $2,499.00 on Amazon or at NYCeWheels.

Trek Valencia

Trek Valencia

Trek has thrown it’s hat into the electric bike ring and maybe just the catalyst to bring the lycra set and the commuters together. They’ve turned their standard Valencia commuter bike into a electric assist hybrid with a 350 watt brushless BionX rear hub motor and regenerative braking. Trek has added electric motors to some of their other bikes as well, such as the FX and the Transport- you’ll notice a plus sign next to these to indicate the hybrid model. Four different pedal-assist modes vary from 25% assistance to 200% assistance. In regenerative mode, you can add on average a 10% increase in battery capacity. There aren’t many reviews out yet on the Trek e-bikes, but you can read specs about them here and some first impressions by users at bike forums here.

A2B Electric Bikes by Ultra Motor

A2B Metro

Don’t be fooled by it’s size. The A2B electric bikes by Ultra Motor pack a powerful punch with a 500 watt motor, 7 speeds, and high torque for hill climbing. Treehugger says it has “the heart of a bicycle and the soul of a scooter”. You can read their full review here. The lithium-ion battery is fully integrated into the downtube. The range is 20 miles on a single charge, but that can be extended to 40 miles with the purchase of an optional second battery. Top speed is 20 mph. The throttle is on the handlebar, meaning you can pedal or not. It does weigh in at a hefty 72 pounds so it may be better for short commutes, recreational fun or a cool option for college students to get around campus. The A2B Metro sells for around $2,700.00.

NYCeWheels is an authorized dealer or you can find a dealer near you here.

IZip Metro

2011 IZip Metro Electric Bike

Now wouldn’t this be fun to zip down to the grocery store? It features a 500 watt brushless hub motor and lithium-ion battery with a top speed of 20 mph and a range of 20-35 miles. It uses both pedal-assist and throttle power and weighs in at 55 pounds. The IZip Metro retails for $2,299.00.

Other Electric Bike Manufacturers We Like:

Ohm Cycles- pictured at the beginning of this article, Ohm Cycles is a Canadian company that makes high end electric bikes.

Giant- Giant made the ever classic Lafree electric bike, which has since been discontinued, but they continue to make the Twist Freedom and Twist Express.

EcoBike- Using both a pedal-assist and manual throttle, the EcoBike is one of the easiest electric bikes to operate. They offer 3 models around the $1,500 range.

You can also purchase electric conversion kits, which is especially helpful if you already have a bike that you’re comfortable with. The BionX conversion kit is considered to be the highest in quality and can be purchased at NYCeWheels. We also like AmpedBikes, which you can read about in this post.

Portland, Oregon continues to set the standard of being a bike and pedestrian friendly city by building a 700 foot bridge over Interstate 5 that will allow users to travel from the Lair Hill neighborhood to the South Waterfront District. The Gibbs Street bridge is only for walking and bike riding. Portland bike commuters will benefit from taxes paid by car owners, as, according to Bike Portland, a percentage of the cost of the bridge will come from gas tax and new vehicle registration.

Here’s a video of how the bridge will look:

Click here to view the embedded video.

Building is scheduled to begin this month and is expected to be finished in one year. The bridge will be alongside the aerial tram, just one segment of Portland’s cutting edge public transportation system which also includes MAX Light Rail. To reduce cost, planners went with a steel box girder style bridge. The structure will include stairways and an elevator. The plan also includes improvements to pedestrian crosswalks around the area.

As a follow up to the Women’s Road Bikes Under $1000, here’s one for the fellas. With road bike sales climbing daily, men everywhere are giving up their mid-life crisis sports car purchases in favor of the greener and more fitness-conscious choice of a sleek road bike. We all want to be Lance Armstrong ripping up those hills, developing some mean quads, and enjoying the fresh air. However, if you do not possess the funds it requires to purchase the same bike Lance rides and you’re not actually training to ride in the Tour de France, then there are plenty of choices out there for a high quality, efficient road bike without having to remortgage the house.

Most of the road bikes in this price range have either a light-weight aluminum frame with carbon fork, important for reducing road vibrations, or you can opt for the tried and true steel frame. Components, such as your rear and front derailleurs, shifters, and brake levers will be decent, though not top of the line. If that’s important to you, they can always be upgraded. All of these bikes feature varying Shimano components for precision and ease of use. Most importantly, weight matters, and all the road bikes we’ve chosen here are under 25 lbs. So as you’re barreling down those steeps, you can at least pretend for a moment you’re racing Mr. Armstrong…. and smoking him.

The Surly Cross Check’s frame is made of steel, which the Surly people describe as “takes a lot of crap, and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg“.
With the popularity of triathlons and charity bike rides reaching a fevered pitch, road bike sales have sky rocketed. The thrill of flying down a hill on your bike, the wind in your…. uh, helmet of course, is not just for kids anymore. Adults are embracing the love of the bicycle once again and recognizing the benefits bikes can have on the physical well-being of their bodies as well as the planet. Road bikes are built for speed with a lightweight frame, shorter wheel base, narrow, high-pressure tires, and dropped handlebars which allow the rider to bend forward for better wind resistance.

The choices available in road bikes can be overwhelming, not to mention shocking, with prices ranging from $100 department store bikes to over $7,000 for some high-end racing bikes. For women, the task of finding the right bicycle becomes even more daunting as most road bikes have been designed for men. However, women generally have shorter torsos and longer legs than men. Luckily for us ladies though, several bicycle manufacturers have recognized that we too feel the need for speed and have designed some nice rides specifically with a woman’s frame in mind. These are our choices for women’s road bikes that will give you a work out and not your credit card. And they’re pretty too.

The best bikes trailers are very useful for transforming ordinary bikes into serious load carrying vehicles. Some of the best bike trailers are designed specifically for carrying children, featuring canopies for sunlight exposure, and many are equipped with plenty of pocket and packing room for any extra necessities.

Bikes can tow a remarkable amount of weight — loads in excess of 880 pounds (400 kilograms) have been hauled behind bikes along flat surfaces. Generally though, 300 pounds (140 kilograms) is considered the upper threshold for hauling. Even large pieces of furniture that won’t fit in a car can comfortably be pulled behind a bicycle with the right kind of trailer! Here are some the different kinds of bike trailers available:

One Wheeled Bike Trailers

For small-sized loads you can try something like a B.O.B trailer, which is a single-wheeled trailer that attached to the back of most bikes. These are practical trailers that are good for carrying light to medium-weight loads (up to 77 pounds or 35 kilograms). A single wheel reduces resistance and allows for narrower riding surfaces, so they are a popular choice for long-distance cyclists.

When overloaded, the single wheel trailer transfers too much weight to the bicycle and riding becomes unstable. Also, heavily loaded trailers can cause frame or hub damage to your bicycle due to the torsion forces transferred through pivoting hitch.

Two Wheeled Trailers

Two wheeled trailers have the potential to carry more weight because they create a more stable platform, and the weight can be distributed right over the trailer wheels, taking the burden off your bicycle. Two wheelers also utilize multi-directional pivoting hitches (since they don’t rely on the bike to keep them upright) which don’t transfer torque through to your bike frame. These trailer are often used to carry children or groceries. Here are some of the top rated two-wheel trailers:

Chariot Bike Trailers

Chariot Bike Trailer

Chariot Carriers, made in Canada, are known for their design quality and functionality. Chariot produces a wide range of single and double child trailers. They are also more expensive than most trailers — you can expect to pay $400-$800 for a Chariot trailer. What you get for this price is a trailer designed with great attention to detail.

Many parents like Chariot’s unique SideCarrier, which puts the carrier directly beside the bike, allowing for more conversation and interaction with one’s child.

You can find <a href="<a href="http://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tt=cl&amp;mi=10248&amp;pw=19331&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rei.com%2Fproduct%2F798148">Chariot Bike Trailers online at <a href="<a href="http://www.avantlink.com/click.php?tt=cl&amp;mi=10248&amp;pw=19331&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.rei.com%2Fproduct%2F798148">REI.

The Classic Burley Honey Bee Bike Trailer

Burley is the most recognized name in child trailer, so much so that people refer to any child trailer as a Burley. In my experience Burley trailers, hold up well after years of use.

The Burley Honey Bee Bike Trailer has room for two kids, with a towing capacity of 100 pounds. Its five point harnesses keep kids safe while the storage pockets provide room for any extra gear. It’s equipped with two 20-inch wheels, and features a folding construction that easily collapses for convenience. There are windows with UV protection included and a safety flag is also added to alert motorists of your towing.

Users appreciate the value and the comfort for their kids, but many complained that without the extra stroller add-on they felt a bit robbed, as many other trailers included the kit with the price. However, many owners noted the ease of construction and lauded the durability of the product.

The Burley Honey Bee Bike Trailer is available at Amazon for $375.

Want to bring your child along on an extended bike ride? One easy way is to use a trailer bike — it’s a one-wheeled bike extension that attaches to the back of your bike. Your smaller companion can then assist you with pedaling, while you control the steering and speed. If your child gets tired, they can just stop pedaling and relax. Another advantages, is that your child becomes familiar with the process of riding a bike. Trailer bike usually include adjustable handlebars and seats to accommodate your child as they grow.

Originally, trailer bikes were introduced into the market by the Adams company in the 1980s. They were marketed under the name “trail-a-bike”, and this is their trademarked term.

Here’s our round-up the trailer bikes available this year:

Instep Allycat Trailer Bike

The Instep Allycat is an inexpensive biketrailer, that easily folds up for storage. It’s recommended for children aged 4-9, and it’s designed to support a rider who weighs up to a maximum of 70 pounds. The trailer itself weighs 30 pounds. Other trailers are lighter and have more features, but this trailer gets the job done. I’ve been using this trailer for about 2 years, and it has held up well.

The Instep Allycat Trailer Bike is available from Amazon for about $115.

Schwinn Hitch Hiker Trailer Bike

The Hitch Hiker trailer bike from Schwinn is similar to the Instep, but it attaches with a higher arch. Like the Instep, it’s also designed to support a maximum of 70 pounds. The Hitch Hiker weighs 22.5 pounds, which is about 7 pounds lighter than the Instep Allycat.

The Hitch Hiker Trailer Bike is available from Amazon for about $95.

Adam’s Original Trail-A-Bike

They were the first to market, and Adams’ Trail-A-Bikes still get good reviews from Amazon buyers. The company offers seven different models, including a tandem trailer. They are made with quality components, and they fold for storage in a car or home. The company claims that their trailers fold smaller than any other (see details here). This trailer accommodates riders up to 85 pounds, and it is recommended for ages 4 to 6 years old.

The Original Trail-A-Bike is available from Amazon for $140-$200.

Adam’s also offers a 7-speed model, so that your child can practice shifting gears. This one got 5 out of 5 stars from Amazon buyers.

Burley Piccolo Trailer Bike

The Piccolo trailer by Burley features a few nice features not found on the trailers from Schwinn and Instep. It has a seven gears, and it attaches to the bike using Burley’s patented ball-bearing guided hitch. The hitch sits perpendicular to the ground, which help the Piccolo handling performance. The Piccolo comes with the storage rack shown in the photos, but unlike the other trailer bikes this one does not fold. It sells for about $275.

If your child is too inexperienced for shifting gears, you might want to consider the Burley Kazoo.

Morgan Cycle Caboose Trailer Bike

The Morgan Cycle Caboose Trailer is a two-wheeled trailer which is aimed at inexperienced or special needs riders. The two wheels give extra support while riding, and the trailer’s chain is completely enclosed to protect the rider’s legs. The Caboose Trailer also includes padded spring seat, and a luggage rack.

Available from Pedal Cars for about $250.
