<p>A Japanese company is making jeans out of a blend of sugar cane and selvage denim. The cane used is Sweet Sorghum, otherwise known as Sweet Millet. It&#8217;s a type of grass grown all over the world for making a molasses-like syrup and animal feed. The Sugarcane jeans that feature this fiber have a faint sweet smell and may have occasional woody tufts poking out of the fabric! Some of the jeans are dyed with persimmon.</p>
<p><img alt="sugar-cane-jeans.jpg" src="http://metaefficient.zippykidcdn.com/sugar-cane-jeans.jpg" width="458" height="197" /></p>
<p>They are available from: <a href="http://www.rakuten.co.jp/hinoya/119706/256094/">Rakuten</a> (Japan), <a href="http://saddlemen.net/jeans/sckakisibu.htm">Saddlemen</a> (Japan). Hemp grew better than cotton in poorer soil conditions, and didn&#8217;t require pesticides, but it was discarded in those early days.</p>
<p>Today we have the technology to process hemp into a very soft but tough material, making it the optimal fiber for jean production. There&#8217;s no reason why all jeans shouldn&#8217;t be made of hemp.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.hempest.com">Hempest</a> has a good selection of <a href="http://store.hempest.com/catalog/section.php?id=1&amp;cid=6">men&#8217;s</a> and <a href="http://store.hempest.com/catalog/section.php?id=2&amp;cid=12">women&#8217;s</a> hemp pants, including jeans.</p>
<p>Pictured here is <a href="http://www.ipath.com/">IPath&#8217;s hemp jeans</a>. They are available for around $70 from <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fs%3Fie%3DUTF8%26x%3D0%26ref_%3Dnb%5Fsb%5Fnoss%26fsc%3D-1%26ih%3D9%5F0%5F0%5F0%5F0%5F0%5F0%5F0%5F1%5F1.8%5F159%26y%3D0%26field-keywords%3Dhemp%2520jeans%26url%3Dsearch-alias%253Dapparel&amp;tag=metaefficient-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957">Amazon</a> and <a href="http://www.utilityboardsupply.com/get_item_ipa025_ipath-hemp-jean-black.htm">Utility Board Supply</a>.</p>
